Concept: You are about as safe as possible during a lightning storm when inside an structure.
Detail: Probably the best safety rule of all is to stay
inside. Lightning rarely travels inside a home. There are several precautions that should be taken however. Particularly in suburban and rural areas, where telephone wires are above ground, do not use a corded telephone, except when very urgent, during a thunderstorm. On rare occasions lightning will travel
through the phone lines, electrical conduit or plumbing. There is little evidence to suggest that lightning can
be drawn through an open window as sometimes suggested. If the house is adequately
protected by lightning rods or is otherwise well grounded, there is little danger. Even if there
were a house fire, there would normally be time to escape in most circumstances.
