Title: Lightning Safety Rules
Concept: When people are struck by lightning, treat the "dead" first!
Detail: When lightning strikes, the rule is, "treat the dead first"! This rather peculiar admonition arises from the fact that lightning frequently paralyzes the respiratory system. Immediate application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may bring people "back to life." There are at least 26 documented lightning strike cases in the last nine years of people who were apparently very dead indeed, for whom CPR meant a new lease in life. Those involved in a lightning strike and are screaming and yelling due to their considerable pain, have an excellent chance of surviving. The vast majority of people who are "struck" by lightning can recover. It is the ones who are stunned and apparently not alive who are in the greatest danger - since 3 to 4 minutes without breathing is certain death.
